Product Designer
Description
Founding Brand Product Designer
Remote - United States
About the team
A small, funded team inside Blackboard building a new consumer AI product from scratch. Executive backing, startup speed, and access to Blackboard's infrastructure and users.
How we run: small senior team, fast cycles, light process, designers and engineers and PMs working side by side.
How we build
Subframe is how we ship UI to engineering across product, marketing, and the whole surface. Design lands in the codebase. No handoff, no mockups getting rebuilt later.
If you know auto layout in Figma, you already know how to use it. If there are other tools you want to bring in, tell us and we'll dig in together.
The Role
Founding designer for the product and the brand around it. Product design, brand, interaction, creative direction, user testing, and shipping front-end through Subframe.
You'll work with product and engineering across the product itself, marketing, onboarding, motion, the design system, and brand. Hands-on. You'll be making the work, not reviewing it.
What you'll do
This is a 0 to 1 AI product. There's a designer already leading things and the work is underway, but it's early. You're here to design and build new features alongside them, not polish things at the edges. Build, ship, learn, repeat.
- Design and build new AI features end to end
- Help shape how the product looks, feels, and behaves alongside the product lead
- Ship UI to engineering through Subframe
- Run user testing and feed what you learn back into the work
- Contribute to the design system as it grows
- Hold a high bar on typography, layout, motion, and detail
- Weigh in on product direction and priorities
What we're looking for
- Strong portfolio across product and brand, shipping things people like using
- World-class visual craft, hands on the work yourself, with strong motion chops
- Sharp product thinker who can hold your own on what should be built, not just how it looks
- Embraced AI in your workflow, fluent on orchestrating agents with skills
- Move fast from idea to shipped, close to engineers, comfortable in ambiguity
- Comfortable with auto layout in Figma (most of what you need to pick up Subframe)
- Plays well with another strong designer already on the team
Nice to have: founding or early-stage experience, creative coding, front-end skills, prior Subframe experience, background in education, health, wellness, or behavior change.
Why this role
- Shape the product from day one. Startup speed inside a company with real distribution and real users. A team where design is core, not support, alongside engineers and PMs who care about craft as much as you do.
